I purchased this car when I returned to New Zealand from the Middle East in 2007. I had previously owned the 3.2 TD New Zealand model, which had proven very reliable and economical to run. At the time, I was renovating a house, and it was an excellent towing vehicle with plenty of space.
This particular car was a Japanese import and therefore badged as a Nissan Regulus instead of a Pathfinder. Two Canadian friends and I took it on a one-month road trip from the Bay of Islands to Milford Sound. It was solid on the road; however, while travelling down the West Coast near Haast Pass, it started belching black smoke. Upon investigation, I found it had blown a hole in the turbocharger outlet pipe that connected to the inlet manifold. I taped it up, which lasted a couple of days before failing again. We carried on until I returned to Auckland, where I replaced the hose.
I never took this one off-road — the body kit made it difficult to get over obstacles — but from my previous experience, these cars are very capable off-road.
