I never carried out any modifications to this car. It’s a true 4x4, with a centre locking differential as well as a rear differential. In cross-country mode, the air suspension raises the ride height an impressive 140 mm, allowing it to clear many obstacles with ease. Inside, the leather and trim are of the standard you’d expect in an expensive saloon car, making it a very comfortable cruiser on the road. It’s no slouch either—capable of surprising hot hatches at the lights.
I recall having to rescue my wife’s son’s Nissan Skyline once. We loaded the Skyline onto a trailer and headed back to the city. While going up a hill, my wife commented, “Can you feel the weight of the car and trailer?” We were doing about 100 km/h at the time. I eased down on the accelerator and the Touareg’s speed climbed—110, 120, 130, 140 km/h—uphill, towing a trailer with a Skyline on it. At 140 km/h my wife said, “Apparently not.” The torque this car had was incredible.
